Rotating machinery is at the heart of the modern world. Almost any time there is energy being produced, consumed, or transmitted, there is a rotating machine involved somewhere. Pumps, turbines, fans, compressors, gas turbine engines, etc., all involve a rotating shaft. And, if the shaft does not spin reliably, even the best aerodynamic, electromagnetic or hydrodynamic performance won't make the user happy.

Foil Bearings

High speed and oil-free turbomachinery have demanding requirements for bearings. For a number of high speed machines up to about 1 MW, compliant gas bearings ("Foil Bearings") are the best choice. These oil-free bearings offer essentially unlimited speed capability, operation from cryogenic to 1200+ F, and significantly better dynamic performance than rigid pad air bearings.
